Seb's thesis was titled "New perspectives on generating vertical emittance from dipole kicks within storage rings".

The thesis was centred on how vertical beam-size can be generated from dipole-magnetic kicks. Future synchrotrons like Diamond-II will need to generate vertical emittance in order to meet its operational needs. This will require resonantly driving the beam; Diamond-II will use Diamond’s existing ‘multi-bunch feedback system’ to achieve this. Characterising the capabilities of such systems and trying to understand the underlying physics were the motivations behind my thesis. Accordingly, my work can be further grouped into two themes: (1) anchoring simulations of resonantly driven electron beams at Diamond-II with observations of deliberate beam enlargement at Diamond; (2) a comprehensive theoretical study into the ensuing dynamics of electron beams when fluctuations in their damping are taken into account.
