LhARA – next-generation radiotherapy for cancer treatment

The UK is investing £2M to kick-start research on next-generation radiotherapy treatments for cancer through the establishment of the Ion Therapy Research Facility (ITRF). A major project at the ITRF, the Laser hybrid Accelerator for Radiobiology Applications (LhARA), will use laser sources to create intense proton and ion beams which it will steer to their target with the help of plasma lenses. Developing these new technologies will mean that LhARA can provide more types of ions with greater control over how they are used for treatment than is possible with current radiotherapy facilities, and do this at a lower cost.

A gentle August for the JAI was kicked into life last week as Oxford DPhil student Luke Dyks successfully defended his thesis. Luke joined the JAI in 2018 following an undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester and has spent the past few years working on the CLEAR user facility at CERN.

Further to their remote seminar in March, the first year JAI students visited CERN on Monday 18th July 2022 and delivered a presentation to mark the end of their design project which was on a proposed design for the Future Circular Collider electron-positron (FCC-ee) particle physics research facility. The presentation was very-well received and this will be followed by a report which will be available on cds.cern.ch (link to follow).

The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science at the University of Oxford and Diamond Light Source Ltd. are seeking a highly qualified post-doctoral research assistant to carry out research in the area of accelerator physics and in particular into collective effects in multi-bend achromat storage rings for synchrotron light sources.
The successful candidate will work with members of the Diamond Accelerator Physics Group in studies of collective effects relevant to the Diamond-II upgrade. These studies will establish how the electron beam interacts with its surrounding environment through wakefields or particle-ion interactions, each of which can potentially degrade the beam properties or cause it to become unstable. The successful candidate will investigate ways to mitigate these effects, such as the use of harmonic cavities, feedback systems or changes to the machine optics, and will actively collaborate with other technical groups working on the design.

Return of the UK accelerator seminar series

After a successful first seminar series in the summer of 2021, the JAI and the Cockroft institute have announced a second seminar series for the autumn. The series has been organised jointly by both institutes, and will contain a plethora of cutting edge accelerator physics topics that looks to even surpass the range of the previous series.
The first seminar will be given by Dr. Walter Wuensch of CERN on Thursday 14th October at 16:15. Dr. Wuensch will be talking about the recently announced collaboration between CERN and Le Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, CHUV, which aims to build a facility to perform the cutting edge "FLASH radiotherapy".

The Department of Physics is seeking to strengthen our programme in Accelerator Physics with the appointment of an Associate Professor or Professor in Particle Accelerator Physics with effect from 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will also be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Worcester College, under arrangements described in the job description. The combined University and College salary will be in the range £48,114 to £64,605 per annum plus substantial additional benefits including a College housing allowance of £9,660 p.a., a research and tutorial allowance of £1,752 p.a. and an entertainment allowance of £450 p.a. On Friday 24th September we were delighted to receive an informal visit from Mr. Christopher Adams, son of Sir John Adams, and a group of friends. Their cycle ride from London to Oxford ended, most appropriately, at the John Adams Institute! The photograph shows JAI Director Phil Burrows giving an al fresco update on the Institute’s progress in the late summer sunshine, across the road from the JAI’s home, the Denys Wilkinson Building, with Christopher Adams to his right.

The inaugural joint UK accelerator institutes seminar series has ended after a octet of thrilling seminars. The series was by all accounts a roaring success and covered all types of accelerator research ranging from the smallest laser driven accelerators to the monolithic FCC-hh.

UK Joint Accelerator Institutes Seminar Series Announced

The two UK particle accelerator institutes, the John Adams Institute and the Cockroft Institute, as well as the STFC's Accelerator Science and Technology Centre are delighted to announce the start of a joint seminar series. The seminar series will begin on the 29th April with a talk from Mats Lindroos on the status of the European Spallation Source and will continue for eight weeks. The topics proposed for discussion range across the entire field of accelerator physics from the AWAKE plasma wakefield project to how we can use machine learning in our work.

Student Design Project: The eSPS at CERN

One of the biggest mysteries in modern physics is the nature of so called dark matter particles. The illusive particles are thought to make up about 27% of the mass in the universe but their detection has so far evaded scientists. A new facility planned at CERN, the eSPS, seeks to change that. The facility, based around CERN’s Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), will provide electron beams of up to 18 GeV to the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX), which would search for dark matter in the mass range we find most ordinary matter, a few MeV to GeV. The current first year PhD students at the John Adams Institute were tasked with completing a design study on the eSPS and then presented the results.

With Hilary term drawing to a close we reach the final talk of our current JAI seminar series. In many ways the best talk has been saved until last. The first year JAI students will be presenting the work that they have done towards their first year design project on Thursday 11th March at 16:15. The aim of this year’s JAI student project is to prepare a design of the primary electron beam for the electron-Super Proton Synchrotron (eSPS) at CERN. Due to the problems caused by Covid, the work done by the students had to be done online, but this has not diminished its quality! Obviously this also means the talk will have to be done via Zoom, which can be accessed by this Zoom link.

The design of a potential new electron facility at CERN has been published as a conceptual design report (CDR). The so called eSPS project, will involve injecting electron beams into the existing CERN super proton synchrotron (SPS), and has been designed by a collaboration including several researchers from the John Adams Institute. The ever popular JAI seminar series will be continuing over Hilary Term despite all of the mayhem thrown up by the current pandemic. Obviously, the lectures will not be able to take place in person and will instead be held virtually over Zoom. The new schedule, which can be found on the JAI Lectures tab, is a veritable smorgasbord of exciting topics from world leading experts in accelerator physics.
The first such talk will take place on Thursday 21st January 2021, and will be given by Steinar Stapnes of CERN on the new eSPS facility, a proposed accelerator complex, with design input from members of the JAI, to be built at CERN.
VHEE2020 Workshop Attracts Over 400 Researchers

Over recent years there has been a resurgence in interest in the use of Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) beams for radiotherapy. Due to this increase, there was a bumper attendance at the VHEE2020 International Workshop, held over 5th - 7th October 2020, and organised by CERN. More than 400 scientists with diverse backgrounds, from clinicians to biologists and accelerator physicists to dosimetry experts, several of whom were from the JAI, gathered virtually to evaluate and discuss the perspectives of this novel technique. The workshop followed a similar one organised in 2017 in Daresbury with the large increase in attendance demonstrates the increasing interest in the field.
Virtual JAI Fest goes down a storm

The annual JAI fest, took place on Friday 11th December and was by all accounts a roaring success. Obviously due to the ongoing situation it was impossible to hold the meeting in person and it had to be held on Zoom. However, this provided no dampener on the excitement of the event, with many interesting talks given by the younger members of the JAI, the details of which can be found on the Indico page.

In some more great news to close a disrupted but altogether successful year for the JAI, Oxford DPhil student Eugenio Senes has successfully submitted and defended his thesis. Eugenio joined the JAI in 2017 following a successful period as a technical student at CERN. Since beginning his DPhil Eugenio has worked mostly on the Advanced WAKefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN as well as CERN's proton synchrotron.

We welcome Emily Archer, Pablo Arrutia Sota, Joseph Bateman and Cameron Robertson (L to R in the photo) who join us as D.Phil. students this October. As a sign of the times the traditional welcome drink was replaced by an autumnal distanced walk in the University Parks with JAI Director Phil Burrows. The JAI graduate course is being delivered remotely this term so the walk provided both fresh air and an opportunity for the Oxford team to catch up in person.
Updated studies of the luminosity performance of CLIC

As well as contributing to the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, researchers at the JAI are helping to design its possible replacement. In a new paper, members of the JAI, working with researchers from CERN, have shown how the luminosity performance of the Compact Linear Accelerator could be significantly higher than its design target.

Members of the John Adams Institute are working as part of a global effort to upgrade the largest physics experiment on Earth, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The upgrade to the LHC, known as the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), aims to vastly increase the number of collisions that occur in each of the four detectors allowing physicists to probe deeper into the origins of the universe.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is by far the world’s largest, highest-energy subatomic particle collider. In order to increase its reach in exploring the subatomic universe in the search for Dark-Matter and other new particles, LHC will be upgraded to provide an even higher rate (the ‘luminosity’) of proton-proton collisions. ‘High-Luminosity LHC’ (HL-LHC) will push these boundaries from the mid - 2020s onwards and the Oxford John Adams Institute (JAI) team, led by Professor Philip Burrows, is playing a key role.

In the third of a hat-trick of JAI PhD successes in 2020, Oxford student Jan Paszkiewicz has successfully submitted his DPhil thesis. High intensity particle beams are required in a number of applications - not just for particle physics. However, when a large number of particles are confined within an accelerator the forces between these particles can lead to collective effects and ultimately particle loss. We use a linear Paul trap, known as the Intense Beam Experiment (IBEX), to experimentally replicate the particle dynamics within a high intensity accelerator.

Manjit Dosanjh is Senior Advisor for Medical Applications at CERN. She is an experienced molecular toxicologist in mechanisms of cancer resulting from environmental exposure and damage. Measuring 27 km in circumference, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest and highest energy particle accelerator in the world. However, in the not too distant future the LHC could be dwarfed by a potential new accelerator, the Future Circular Collider (FCC). If built the FCC will be 100 km in circumference and will be able to collide two beams of protons to an energy over seven times higher than the LHC.

Dr Suzie Sheehy is an academic, science communicator and member of the JAI, based at the University of Oxford, where she holds a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. Her research focuses on developing particle accelerators for future applications in areas such as medicine and energy.
In June 2018 Suzie spoke at TEDxSydney on “The case for curiosity driven research”. This talk has now reached over 1 million viewers online and describes how curiosity driven research, research purely for the sake of learning something new, can lead to the development of technology.

Accelerator science has demonstrated a rich history of inventions, often inspired by Nature itself. The history of accelerator science, expressed in the form of the so-called Livingston plot which shows energy reached versus time, describes this history via a sequence of ascending steps corresponding to the birth and saturation of particular technologies of acceleration, followed by the birth of even newer technologies.

The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science has hosted the 3rd Low Emittance Ring Workshop in Oxford on July 8th-10th. The workshop was attended by more than 80 scientists representing 25 institutes and brought together accelerator experts from the community of light sources, colliders and damping rings. The workshop was organised in five sessions covering many aspects of the design and operation of low emittance accelerators, the challenges with collective effects and the most recent technology advancements in magnets, vacuum and diagnostics design.

The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science has recently hosted the visit of a delegation from the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (JINR, Russia) to UK on 26-28 April 2011.
JINR is an international intergovernmental scientific research organisation, which has 18 member states, and another 6 countries as associated members. The three main activities of JINR are elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics.

APPEAL-2 Teachers conference took place in the department on Saturday 2nd July 2011. The conference offered teachers the opportunity to update their knowledge of the physics underlying the LHC and the connection between accelerator science, particle physics and astronomy.
The conference aimed to answer questions such as "What is the origin of the Universe?", "How are LHC experiments connected to astronomy and dark matter?" and "What are the applications of particle accelerators in our daily lives?".

Suzanne Sheehy has been awarded an 1851 Fellowship and will be the Commission's Brunel Research Fellow for 2010. This is awarded annually to the highest placed successful candidate for an 1851 Fellowship who has proposed an engineering project which will be pursued in an academic environment.
